Refugees: Effective Advocacy in Diverse Communities
-
- Presentation speakers
Refugees come to the US fleeing the threat of persecution from their home country. Very often these same community members are lost in their new home due to language barriers, cognitive functioning due to post traumatic stress, racism, literacy, education, and different cultural norms. Incidents of extreme violence including torture, multiple incidents of sexual assault, domestic violence, child abuse are common while these individuals fail to take advantage of or even avoid services due to culturally inappropriate services, a lack of understanding or shame. In this training you will learn tools to effectively advocate for the diverse group that is “refugee”, understand resources specific to these communities, and strategies to keep victims safe within is small ethnic communities.
